“Another One Flew Over The Coo Coos Nest”

The time when another child is leaving to start their own adventures against the will of the parents advise is a daunting familiarity. I’m both happy and nervous to be sending my daughter off to college today; amidst the civil unrest in the world and a revolving pandemic. We have raised a strong and intelligent daughter and I know that she’s in God’s hands! This is just what I’m telling myself for sanity and a peace of mind but knowing the main fact of our lives have been turned upside down in America.

She has seen the world for what it is and that sweet little girl with such a loving heart, have tons of questions pertaining to being black in this world.

  • We taught our sons what to do when getting pulled over.
  • We taught our sons how to respectably respond to police when being asked questions.
  • We taught our sons that they are black and that’s what is seen to describe their personality first.

In all that we taught, we forgot to let both our daughters know that life is not fair for black women either. We forgot that raising black boys to men should have included the girls. My oldest is strong and love the melanin in her skin. She loves who she is because we taught her by showing god’s love through us and how we interact with all kinds of people, this is what’s to be judged first. Not the case in America today and it’s sad world right now that even I have tons of questions.

My advice to my 1st baby girl:

We live in a world where there are so many situations, people and voices that want to steal our peace. I believe that we must have an attitude that says “let me live in peace” to situations that try to anguish our heart, extinguish our faith and steal our trust. If the situations around you steal your peace, it is not because they have greater authority in your life, but because you have given permission for that to happen. Our inner peace is our responsibility. To sum it all up; we are called to love God and to love people! “even in the midst of tribulation and adversity” we can find peace within ourselves.”
